The Northern Lighthouse Board has 208 lighthouses protecting the coastline of Scotland, the Northern Isles, The Western Isles and the Isle of Man as well as an office in Edinburgh, and bases in Oban, Inverness, Lerwick and Kirkwall. The lighthouse stations are infrequently visited, with some being annual or biennial maintenance visits of varying lengths as detailed in the requirements document. This should be taken into account in the risk assessment. Of these buildings 66 have a water system that is supplied from either mains, private or stored water supplied by NLB tender. NLB has a duty to ensure those systems are assessed, compliant and maintained to ensure they pose no risk. It should be noted on all lighthouse station sites that the water system is used for washing, showering and flushing toilets, bottled water is provided for drinking and cooking. For mains sites bottled water is still the preferred means for drinking water. All stations with water have UV and particulate filters within the water system, unfortunately the UV system is switched off between visits and is not optimally maintained.
