National Highways is committed to improving the safety, usability, and consistency of roadside facilities and associated guidance across the Strategic Road Network (SRN), including the All Purpose Trunk Road (APTR) network. A key element of this ambition is ensuring that the data held on service facilities is accurate, reliable, and up to date. Current Challenges - Outdated Data: Existing APTR facility information is minimal, incomplete, and in many cases out of date. - Inconsistent Signage: Some sites still display legacy "Services" signage, and only a small number currently comply with the DfT 2022 Circular definition of an APTR service area. - Limited Facility Information: There is little or no comprehensive information about what facilities are currently available to customers using the APTR. To address these issues, a full review of the existing network is required to better inform drivers about available facilities and to support improvements in customer experience. The refreshed dataset will ensure that documentation accurately reflects what exists on the network and will provide the insight needed to identify opportunities for future enhancement.
